The illustrations are clever too. Great gift if you can find it! Even runs out @ times!" -Phyllis Szal-smith
"This book goes right to what the owner needs, explains what you need to know and solves your problems asap. But it’s much more than that. It contains a systematic, rigorous and totally thorough approach to raising your puppy along with tons of photos that show you how to do everything. I read several training books before I found this book, and I wish I'd known about it when I first got my Goldendoodle pup. It would have saved me so much worry and guessing!" -Polecat
"If you are going to buy one book before your puppy arrives, this is the one. I have probably read 20+ puppy books in my life and this is by far the most comprehensive, simple to understand, totally informative." -P. Li
"This book is a must for all new puppy owners! It lets you know what to expect and correct actions before they become habits in your dog. I really wish I had this book with my past dogs as they would have been so much better behaved and we all would have been happier." -Duke
"Great book for first time puppy owners. Although I got it 7 yrs ago when I got my lab, I looked at many puppy advice books and articles and this book is clear, comprehensive and gives detailed good advice (some advice in other sources is subjective or just bad advice). The info I learned from this book I have used for 7 years (and for several dogs) to make my Labrador the best dog in the world." -Dax
"A perfect guide to the new puppy owner or owner-to-be. Well written and illustrated, and seemingly address every issue one experiences with a new puppy. I recommend reading it BEFORE bringing the puppy or grown dog home." -Ed
"Unbelievably useful information for new puppy parents. Even if you have had dogs for years, I promise you will learn things you didn't know." -Mo
There A Puppy In The House Surviving the First Five Months edition by Michael Wombacher Crafts Hobbies Home eBooks
I read several training books before I found out about this book, and I seriously wish I'd known about it when I first got my Goldendoodle pup. It would have saved me so much worry and guessing! Let's face it, young puppies are adorable but for the first several weeks in your household, they're obnoxious little monsters that drive you crazy. They pee and poop everywhere, they chew *everything* they can get their mouths on, they bite your fingers, your nose, your clothes... Mine also barked and whined every time we confined him to his crate or pen. There's a lot of advice on this stuff online, but this book book gives very detailed, well organized, step by step instructions on how to deal with the scenarios you're likely to run into. For instance on potty training via crate training, the book gives several scenarios depending on whether you'll be home and what kinds of puppy confinement arrangements are available in your home. I also like the many photographs illustrating how to train your pup various commands. He also gives you really helpful tips on how to curb unacceptable behaviors like stealing food from the kitchen counter.
What this book does that most training books don't is outline the process of developing your relationship with your pup and establishing his/her place in the household in a holistic way. Also, most popular training books these days are "positive-only," forbidding you from ever reprimanding a pup; while Wombacher relies heavily on rewards, he also stresses that pups need and want to learn limits for their own sense of security. Now I know how to say NO to my pup in a way that he understands, and without hurting or psychologically damaging him in any way.
For the record I'm taking Wombacher's Puppy II course in SF with my doodle. We switched over because the advice from positive-only obedience trainers we saw were not very helpful for dealing with his more obnoxious habits like mouthing and acting bonkers on walks. Now my pup walks nicely on leash and gets lots of compliments on his manners whenever I take him out--not bad for 4 1/2 months old!

A perfect, guide to the brand new puppy owner or owner-to-be. Well written and illustrated, and seemingly address every issue one experiences with a new puppy. I recommend reading it BEFORE bringing the puppy or grown dog home.
It would be even better with an appendix for quick reference when a question or issue comes up for which you are looking for quidance
We were looking for a puppy training class for our three month old bull terrier, Lucia, and a friend recommended Michael Wombacher. Signing up for his classes was an excellent decision. His approach to training works! We bought the book as review and reinforcement for the classes, but it's worth buying even if you cannot take Michael's classes. It is clearly written and easy to follow and reflects Michael's style and expertise in training. I think that Michael relies less now on correcting a puppy with a squirt bottle (verbal correction or Pet Corrector instead) than he did when he wrote the book. I purchased a copy of Michael's book for my granddaughter who is using it to train her Havanese puppy, Kobe. Lucy is lying under the desk as I write this review and I think she agrees!
If you are going to buy one book before your puppy arrives, this is the one. I have probably read 20+ puppy books in my life and this is by far the most comprehensive, simple to understand, totally informative. Everything Mr. Wombacher says in it makes sense. There are a lot of dog trainers out there. Beware. They don't all have the same way of looking at dog training. I am 100% for what Mike Wombacher says. Not only will this book prepare you before the arrival of the puppy, it also outlines a week by week schedule and routine so that you can prepare the puppy for adult life. The foundation of these beginning months is the most important. If you follow the advice of this book with the puppy, I'm sure you will have a well-adjusted, socialized, friendly, obedient adult dog. I love this book so much, I contacted Mike Wombacher and signed up for his training, even though I have to drive an hour to get there. Highly recommended. A MUST read!!!!
