Once upon a time, in a faraway place, lived a boy named Alex. Alex had a cute puppy dog named Max, that used to follow him everywhere he went. Alex's father had an antique shop at the town marketplace. He used to sell all kinds of old and used goods that he bought from travelers who passed through town.
When Alex and his friends came back from their first adventure at the lost kingdom, he found another interesting item. It was a small perfume bottle with some blue liquid inside.
“Whose perfume is it Father?” asked Alex. “It is a rare perfume made by the mermaids that live in the deepest ocean,” answered Alex's Father. "Unfortunately, their secret kingdom is in great danger. A witch cast a spell on them and they need this perfume to make a special healing potion."
And so the adventure begins…, Alex and his friends fly to the mermaid’s kingdom ...

Author Efrat Haddi, with excellent support from illustrator Abira Das, has written a fine little story about the value of courage, and the clever way she tells the story makes it remarkable and memorable for children. Efrat Haddi obviously understands children (she is a mother of 3!) as well as the techniques of teaching children concepts through stories. This is a very well written and illustrated book that should become a favorite bedtime story - with a lesson.
Alex is a little lad with a little pup and is fascinated with this father's antique shop with all the stories his father shares about the origin of things. Alex inquires about a small perfume bottle with green liquid inside his father tells him the perfume is rare and made by mermaids, but a witch has placed a curse on their secret kingdom that can only be cured by the perfume made into a healing potion. Alex is very curious (of course) and when he sees the old carpet his father reminds him is a magic flying carpet - but that could fly only with some forgotten magic words. His previous friend (Quest 1), the giant genie provides the wishes and Alex, Max his pup, and the genie are off to the ocean. The dive into the water, find the palace where the sleeping mermaids are locked in cages. Alex approaches the cages, opens the perfume bottle and the mermaids awaken. While opening the cages the witch comes in and Max grabs her skirt with his teeth, frightening the witch who says she will not cast a spell if Max will just let her escape. Max saves the day - but so do Alex and the genie with their part of the Quest. The Queen gives the helpers a potion of Mermaid power to help them on their next adventure.
More magic and fairy tale feeling in this story than usual for Efrat and she and Abira handle it beautifully. Grady Harp, May 15
You always know this author is going to give children a delightful story of fun, learning and adventure. Alex's quest is going to take him to the land of mermaid's and children are going to love every moment.
Great children's book my 5 year old daughter loves mermaids. I read this book to her tonight for her bed time story and she loved it. Thanks for rewriting such a great children's book. This was a great short bed time story.
