“Before you read these poems go and check out what the New Yorker is pushing as poetry. Then open up Young Americans, seems obvious what Jordan Castro is doing is revolutionary, he expressing emotions through poetry that have never been done before. The style, the way the subject matter is portrayed, even the meter, are new.”

- Noah Cicero, author of The Human War, The Insurgent, and Best Behavior

“If you are a person who doesn’t really know what they are doing and you would like to read about another person who doesn’t really know what they are doing either, I recommend reading this poetry book. I enjoyed reading these poems. Or something.”

- Chris Killen, author of The Bird Room

“I read these poems three times in one night, then put the duvet over my head and held my knees for a while. It’s good when something makes sense. I really really liked these poems.”

- Ben Brooks, author of Grow Up

Young Americans Jordan Castro 9781937865047 Books Reviews

this is a great collection of poetry. something to read over and over again. i related to a lot of the pieces in this book.
Castro expands my conception of what poetry can be in these poems. The cadence, the structure, the thought processes, all of it are just things I didn't expect to be poems...but it works. I dug these poems on a fundamental level. I dug the casualness, I dug the hopeful mixed with hopeless tone, I dug it all. Or something.
I've read through this book once so far. Periods of time seemed to sort disappear while I was reading it. When I stopped reading it I felt like I was 'emerging' from something back into the world or my room or wherever. I like this feeling a lot and don't have it very often.

The poems seem very well-'crafted' to me, I guess in the 'sense' that it seems like Jordan both cares about words a great deal and that he takes very good 'care' of them when he uses them in poems. 'Care' seems like an important word re these poems, in a non-ironic way. To me they are very clear poems and/but are aware of the ways in which things in 'life' are not so clear, especially things in/things that have to do with thoughts. To me they are very precise poems in how they address those ways and those things.

''Photo Booth' Video Emotional Poem' felt especially 'astonishing' to me. I've had thoughts about it being 'one of the best poems I've ever read I'm pretty sure'. There are probably several reasons for my thinking/feeling like this about it but I'm not sure how to articulate them yet, or if I should (try to) articulate them, etc.

I look forward to reading this book again very much.
i was in my car writing about what i thought of this book the other day. that notebook is in the car though and im in bed with a laptop on my blanketed groin and i dont wanna get up. but what i remember writing in there was the line "thanks for sucking Jordan, so i dont have to"

for the most part i liked the titles more than the poems, but some of them were cool, and i laughed a few times.

i think the book shows someone who gets high a lot who wants to create but doesnt end up doing a great job because their brain is [something]

i like the cover a lot, and the title is cool

one other thing i remember from my notebook is that when i wrote the word titles i said it in my head as tit-ls (like skittles!), like a candy or something that was a bunch of little tits. and i liked that. and i probably wouldnt have thought of that if i wasnt reading jordans book. so thanks jordan! i hope you know what i mean
I was very excited to read this as the author seemed similar to authors/poets such as Sam Pink, Megan Boyle, or Chelsea Martin. The cover art is beautiful and the reviews were optimistic.
Young Americans took about a year of putting it down and picking it back up to get through. I just could not get in to it and felt no connection with the author. It's as though a boy had taken his day to day thoughts and actions then narrowed them down to a few lines on drugs, pooping, food or being sad. The titles of each piece are fun but that isn't enough to make me want to read a book.
I read this book in one night, not because I was planning to, but because I couldn't/didn't want to stop. Jordan's writing is compelling, readable, honest and sometimes even brilliant. This book is about a philosophy, the philosophy of Jordan, of a generation. Reading this book, I kept feeling like Jordan "has arrived" at something, the edge of modern philosophy, in which everything--every feeling, every interaction--can be deconstructed into exactly what it is, as it should be. There were poems in here that me feel emotional, there were poems in here that made me feel sad, there were poems in here that made me laugh. A good writer is perceptive enough to notice aspects of life and describe them in a way that others haven't yet, and this in turn helps the reader identify those same perceptions or feelings in the their own life. I can definitely say that "Young Americans" is a book that does this, and I highly recommend it for other young americans, or anyone in general.
this is the kind of book i would feel relieved to find in the bathroom at a party or something. i frequently feel anxious/inadequate at socializing with other people, and when i read this book, i felt a sense of solidarity with jordan because i can relate to his difficulty relating to other people. i felt good while reading it and intend to read it again.
